About this event
We are pleased to announce that “Speaking Out: Tackling Accent Bias at An Elite University” will be returning in April 2025. The event will be an opportunity to share experiences of accent bias and linguistic discrimination in higher education, as well as discuss some possible interventions.
We have confirmed the following speakers who are leading on issues of language, education, and social (in)justice:
- Dr Karen Lowing, the University of the Highlands and Islands
- Dr Alex Baratta, the University of Manchester
- Dr Gisela Tomé Lourido, the University of Leeds
- The Robertson Trust
The event will be concluded with a roundtable discussion that will feature students, staff members, and EDI representatives. No knowledge of linguistics is needed and there will be an opportunity to ask questions throughout the event.
This event is co-organised by the 93% Club Edinburgh, the Scottish Social Mobility Society, the Department of Linguistics and English Language.
