About this event

Welcome to Women in Tech York's May event!

Who are we?

Women in Tech York is a community! We're made up of individuals studying, working or interested in technology. We run events where attendees can share their knowledge and interests, as well as encourage and empower one another whilst building their network.

Our events are not exclusive to women; absolutely everyone is welcome. You also don't need to be a coder or consider yourself technical to get something out of our events.

Events run on the 2nd Thursday of the month.

We welcome all students and career-changers who are interested in learning more about tech and careers in the industry.

As always, there will be a free buffet (vegan options available) thanks to our amazing sponsors Isotoma and Onebright. Please let us know about allergies in advance.

Our Goals

Our monthly events are designed to compliment our goals:

⭐ Feel included – Join a space where everyone is welcome. ⭐Explore your options – Discover new paths, ideas, and tech. ⭐ Grow your network – Connect with like-minded people ⭐ Learn something new – Gain insights from speakers, panels, and discussions.

Because we mix up the format each month, some events will be more social, while others might focus on talks or structured networking.

This month...

We'll be discussing Cybersecurity with experts Dr Yann Golanski, Director at Firmamentum and Kai-Yun Tsao, Senior Cyber Security Analyst at Zoopla.

This month our event is designed to help you Learn something new.

About this month's speakers

Dr Yann Golanski is the founder and director of Firmamentum Consulting, who guide companies to make more secure, robust, and efficient software in a drama free environment. He holds a DPhil in theoretical astrophysics and has served as a research fellow in applied mathematics, focusing on optimisation, graph, and game theories.

Before the term “DevOps” was coined, Yann was working in DevOps, in charge of the largest email system in Europe. His professional journey includes researching new algorithms in metrology, programming command and control systems for giant underwater robots, and serving as a director of cybersecurity and governance.

Kai-Yun Tsao is a senior Cyber Security Analyst and STEM Ambassador at Zoopla, specialising in operating system, network and application security. Her eight year career in Taiwan began with application, server and desktop virtualisation, then encompassed identity management, security log analysis and threat hunting.

After graduating from the University of York with a Distinction in MSc Cyber Security, Kai co-authored a survey on cyber security threats and solutions for drone communication and FANET. This survey was published by ScienceDirect; further related articles are currently being prepared. Kai is devoted to making cyber security an open and accessible subject to everyone. She particularly enjoys discussing risk assessments and their related mitigation strategies.

FAQS

Can you cater for allergies and dietary requirements?

We will always do our best to cater for everyone. If you let us know about your requirements at least 72 hours in advance we'll pass them on to the venue and ask them to accommodate. We order a vegan buffet by default.

If you have any concerns about the food on the night then please speak to a member of staff. Nutritional information can be found on Revolution's website. We usually order a buffet which typically includes mini burgers, fries, salads, garlic bread and small snacks. If you need to know what food will be provided ahead of time then please let us know.

Is this event accessible?

  • The room booked for this event is upstairs, but can be accessed by a lift. Please contact Revolution to confirm access to the lift.
  • We usually use Google Slides and can turn on captions if required
  • W e ask our speakers to use the microphones provided.
  • We have exclusive access to the upstairs toilets - please note there are 2 steps up to access these toilets specifically, though other toilets are available.
  • You know your needs best - we've added an option on our order form for any adjustments or requirements you want to let the organisers know about in advance. We will do our best to ensure a fair and comfortable experience for everyone.

Is this event inclusive ?

We try our best to make sure everyone feels included, welcome and comfortable at Women in Tech York events

  • Pronoun stickers are available for everyone (if your pronoun isn't provided please let us know and we'll get more created to include you).
  • Red camera badges are available to indicate that you don't want to be photographed.
  • Music is kept to a low volume.

Getting here

If you're unsure how to get to Revolution check out the Getting Here section of our website - we've added information on car parks, buses and bike paths around York.

What are donations for?

Donations cover the cost of running the events, until we can find a third sponsor. Please note that we are not a registered charity.

The suggested donation amount is £4 - £8. The cost per attendee (not including costs covered by sponsors) is approximately £4, and, as not everyone will be in a position to contribute, it would be greatly appreciated if those in a position to cover the costs for an additional person could do so. This will hopefully prevent us from having to charge a fixed amount in future, if we're unable to find another sponsor.

Code of Conduct

The short version of our code of conduct is be respectful. Everyone here is part of our community. We do not tolerate any form of harassment or abuse.

If you'd like to see the full code of conduct, please view it on our website https://www.wityork.org.uk/conduct or email WomenInTechYork@gmail.com for more details.
