About this event
- 9 hours
We're back for another epic edition of the Nigerian Festival UK. Last year was amazing, the festival was brilliant, colourful and educational - It lived up to all our expectations.
This year, we will be retaining the theme from last year "Our Language, Our Heritage."
Conserving the cultural richness and unique heritage of Great country Nigeria, is important to us, so we have decided to use the festival as a means to address the growing concern that some Nigerian languages may be at risk of becoming extinct. Nigeria is a beautiful multilingual nation with major and minor languages spreading over 250 different ethnic groups. As one of the most linguistically diverse countries in the world, aside from Nigeria’s three major languages – Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba, which are predominantly spoken in the North, South-East, and South-West regions of the country respectively, Nigeria has over 500 spoken languages. Unfortunately, most of the major and minor languages have gone or are predicted to become extinct in the next 10 to 50 years.
Our existence is deeply rooted and inspired by the need to bridge the cultural gaps amongst Nigerian/ African youths and adults who have not had the opportunity of learning the customs and traditions of their motherland due to being far away from home.
