Job overview

This post is for a Senior Clinical Fellow in Respiratory Medicine. This is a fixed-term 6-month post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in St Helens & Knowsley Teaching Hospitals.

The position will enable the Respiratory Department to continue to develop high-quality Respiratory services in a large teaching secondary care hospital that has been completely rebuilt with state-of-the-art facilities and cardiac diagnostics.  The appointees will be expected to have extensive general Respiratory medicine training and experience with competency and subspecialty experience in all aspects of Respiratory condition management. Further sub-speciality interest is desirable and will be encouraged.

Applicants must be eligible for full Registration with the GMC at the time of appointment.

Main duties of the job

  • To observe the provisions of and adhere to all Trust policies and procedures.
  • To actively participate in the annual performance review to identify personal development needs.
  • To attend Trust Statutory and Mandatory training sessions as required and any other training courses relevant to the post.
  • To fully comply with the relevant sections of the Health and Safety at Work Act.  The post holder must also understand and implement St Helens and Knowsley Hospitals NHS Hospitals Trust’s “Statement of Policy on Health and Safety at Work” and the Trust’s corporate “Health and Safety Policies and Procedures”. The post holder is required to follow all applicable rules and procedures relating to Health and Safety at Work and to take all responsible precautions.
  • To be aware of the confidential aspects of the post. To keep up to date with the requirements of information governance, undertake mandatory training and follow Trust policies and procedures to ensure that Trust information is dealt with legally, securely, efficiently and effectively. Breaches of confidentiality will result in disciplinary action that may involve dismissal. You must maintain the confidentiality of information about service user staff and organisational business in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation 2018 (GDPR)  and the Caldicott principle

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Applicants must hold full registration with the GMC at the time of appointment
  • Completion of ALS Course (provider status)
Desirable criteria
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent medical qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum 4 years post-graduate experience with at least 2 years in Respiratory Medicine
  • Clinical training and experience in order to manage/supervise and/or offer expert clinical opinion on patients presenting to the Respiratory department
  • Ability to take responsibility for the clinical care of patients within the Respiratory department
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to perform ultrasound-guided procedures independently (pleural ultrasound)
  • Ability to perform bronchoscopy

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Experience in clinically supervising a range of doctors in training, with the ability to teach clinical and practical skills
  • Experience of and commitment to clinical audit
  • Commitment to continuing medical education
  • Ability to work as part of a team, with good interpersonal skills; enquiring, critical approach to work; caring attitude to patients; ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of providing and organising education sessions for doctors in training
  • Experience of formally supervising medical students, F1, F2 and CT trainees is desirable
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems with publications in refereed journals
