Graduate Electrical Engineer

British Steel

Starting initially as a Junior Maintenance Engineer prior to progressing into the role of British Steel Maintenance Engineer, you'll be part of our team that manufactures high-quality steel products for our demanding customers. You'll be involved in the maintenance and improvement of complex manufacturing processes and infrastructure.

You’ll be expected to generate continuous improvement proposals, turning them into viable solutions considering factors such as safety, manufacture, cost and quality – to name but a few. Your challenge is to meet our stringent safety and production requirements, whilst giving British Steel leading-edge performance.

This is very much a hands-on role, being responsible for Electrical, Control and/or Instrumentation maintenance activities within an area of our business on either the Scunthorpe or one of our Teesside sites.

You will utilise modern diagnostic technology to ensure that the productive capability and reliability of the plant are optimised and improved for the ever-changing needs of the business.

What we need to know about you

We’re looking for someone with excellent analytical, organisational and communication skills. Combining your technical and engineering knowledge, you'll know how to collaborate effectively with a range of internal and external stakeholders.

Qualified to degree level in an electrical, control or instrumentation discipline, it will also be a significant advantage if you have experience working in a maintenance environment.  Predominantly learning on the job under the supervision of our Engineering team, you will have the opportunity to apply your academic knowledge in a practical environment.

You should have an inquisitive mind and be somebody who likes to problem solve with the aim of improving the reliability of our plant to ensure it remains operational for our 24/7 manufacturing operations.

We operate in an exciting, fast-paced industry where we support each other; therefore, the ability to manage priorities to tight but achievable timescales is required, alongside the ability to work well as part of a team.

What we can offer you

We know our employees are our greatest asset, and alongside the great benefits packages we offer, we continue to invest in their careers by providing a huge range of training and development opportunities.

When you become part of our graduate programme, you will have a personal skills development plan from day one to ease you into the Company and to support your growth into management positions.

Once established and having proven your capability, we offer extra career progression opportunities up to and including Senior Management level. We also offer an opportunity to work in different areas, should you choose, experiencing different equipment and processes to further broaden your knowledge and skill base.

Whatever your stage in life, you'll find a range of benefits to complement your work-life balance. The benefits you'll enjoy include:

  • Defined contribution company pension scheme
  • 27 personal annual leave days + statutory bank holidays
  • Life Assurance
  • A comprehensive Company sick pay scheme
  • Health Cash Plan via our partnership with Simplyhealth
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Standby and call-out payments
  • Family-friendly benefits, including enhanced maternity, paternity and adoption leave
  • Full graduate support programme, with routes to further education and career progress.
