Day-to-day, your focus will be on delivering structural designs, assessments, drawings, specifications, calculations and enhancements that keep vital and innovative projects moving. You’ll make sure assets are safe, serviceable, reliable and compliant; develop your own solutions; and be a trusted source of structural engineering advice for your team and the wider TfL, including our Heads of Engineering Delivery.
The successful candidate is expected to bring technical expertise in structural engineering, especially in association with Bridges & Structures design/assessments and have the following essential knowledge, skills and experience:
Knowledge:
- You are expected to be a Chartered Civil or Structural Engineer or possess equivalent knowledge and experience
- Significant knowledge and experience in undertaking Structural Designs and/or Structural Assessments of various bridge types, covered ways, buildings and other railway/transportation-related structures.
- Significant knowledge of supporting construction, operation and maintenance, repair and strengthening of structures
- A deep understanding of legislation, technical standards, health, safety and environmental considerations and industry best practice related to structural design/assessment, and principles of risk management and value engineering.
- A deep understanding of design and assessment quality assurance processes.
Skills:
- Ability to lead and undertake the design and/or assessment, repair and strengthening of Civil Engineering and building structures. TfL/Railway-related experience will be desirable.
- Ability to support and supervise graduates and apprentices in their development.
- Ability to carry out hand calculations and use analysis/design software.
- Ability to use MS suite applications.
- Ability to produce sketches/instructions and supervise CAD drawings production.
Experience:
- Significant experience in Bridges & Structures designs and/or assessments, construction, operation and maintenance
- Experience in providing site technical advice, leading site visits, surveys and inspections, and producing reports for such
- Experience in producing pioneering/feasibility studies and the production and evaluation of structural concepts independently.
- Experience in applying subject matter expertise to resolve complex technical challenges.
- Broad experience in applying engineering judgement to support large programmes, enhancement projects or operational activities.
- Experience in building relationships and influencing stakeholders at all levels within and outside TfL.
