The Department
Networks and Hosting sits within the IT area of TfL. The department is responsible for Microsoft (including Windows, Azure and SQL), AWS, Oracle and LINUX technologies managing and maintaining TfL’s core infrastructure at a virtual and physical layer.
The core servers we use include Hyper-Converged Infrastructure and full Windows Environments, hosting over 400 of TfL’s Mission Critical and Business Critical services, including The Elizabeth Line, London Underground, Overground, Buses and Oyster/Contactless, which ultimately keep TfL services running.
The Team
The team is made up of approximately 20 infrastructure platform specialists covering key functional areas, including planned and non-planned works.
The Senior Role
As a Senior Infrastructure Engineer, you will ensure that day-to-day work is managed, provide technical guidance on the work, and technically coach and support a number of Infrastructure Engineers. You will be empowered to be involved in technical and strategic decision-making and planning. The ability to build collaborative relationships will be key to your success.
There may also be a requirement to support out-of-hours work and on-call for TfL’s 24/7 supported services.
Non planned work streams: • Run operations – primary focus is to prevent outages through proactive performance monitoring, capacity planning, and, if a failure does occur, identifying the root cause and restoring the service.
Planned work streams: • Delivering specific project outcomes, including service transition and new services related to the infrastructure environment, including proof of concept activities. • Collaboration with our Technical Delivery team, and often Infrastructure Architects, is key to helping deliver these outcomes. • Ensuring that tools and platforms remain upgraded and compliant to keep them safe from cyber-attacks, stable, and fully supported. • Working closely with our team of Technical Delivery Managers to deliver improvements to existing infrastructure
Skills, Knowledge and Experience
Essential
5 years + of at least 70% of the below
• Microsoft Windows Server up to and including Win2022 • Hyper-Converged Infrastructure (DELL VxRail) • VMware vSphere up to and including 8.0 • Microsoft Azure Stack • Windows Clustering • HP C7000 blade enclosures • Microsoft Active Directory, DNS and DHCP • PowerShell (to enable automation through scripting) • Azure and AWS Cloud • Knowledge of SAN, NAS and Host connectivity to Windows • Forcepoint Web Security Solutions • Trend Antivirus Security Solutions • Microsoft Defender Security Solutions • F5 load balancing technology • Secure File Transfer technology • Experience with continuous integration/continuous delivery techniques and implementing DevOps best practices • ITIL Foundation v4 certification.
