Overview of project/role:

This role is responsible for undertaking maintenance, servicing, breakdown and fault repair of all substation plant and equipment under the control of HV Power. 

To ensure that the assets are maintained in accordance with set specifications to meet safety and operational criteria in order to provide efficient and continuous power supplies to the London Underground railway system.

Key Accountabilities

  • Maintain, service, repair, disassemble and rebuild and recalibrate all substation plant, including HV, LV and DC switchgear, signalling systems - FC’s and RC’s, batteries & chargers, rectifiers, transformers and rotating plant, SVC’s and associated PQ equipment – harmonic filters.  An appreciation of LEPS systems – OLBI.
  • Diagnose and eliminate failures and failure modes both on switchgear and plant wiring and control. Use instrumentation and diagnostic tools.
  • Use and apply the content of technical documents, manuals, diagrams, drawings to plant and systems.
  • Install and modify local lighting and power systems and all manner of substation plant and wiring schemes.
  • To act as Site Person in Charge (SPIC) as required for both Power & Electrical and 3rd party works.
  • To adhere to all health & safety policies and procedures – particularly the drugs and alcohol policy.
  • To prepare and submit reports on faults and plant breakdowns attended.
  • To ensure that safe working practices are compiled with when LV isolations are involved – with a particular focus towards Live Working on battery & OLBI systems.
  • To advise on aspects of safety, all work undertaken by internal and external contractors and for their on-site supervision in relation to SPIC obligations.
  • To respond to emergency breakdown of plant and to take appropriate decisive actions.
  • To ensure that all of the plant and equipment assets are maintained correctly, according to tolerances as defined by work instructions, test sheets operating and maintenance manuals or Engineer’s direction to maximise efficiency of plant.
  • To ensure all documentation associated with tasks is completed to a defined satisfactory standard.
  • To declare plant fit / unfit for service.  Job holder follows the instructions of others when switching plant equipment on or off.
  • Undertake advanced condition monitoring techniques, thermal imaging, trip profiling, Direct Acting Overload testing, use of Micro-Ohmmeter (doctoring), IR testing, etc.
  • The job holder is required to drive company vehicles, clean them and carry out vehicle checks as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Knowledge:

  • Position holders must have an Electrical Engineering Qualification or equivalent, including a fully served apprenticeship.
  • Be proficient in the use of electrical test equipment used to determine the condition of plant & equipment.
  • Have relevant electrical experience (fitting skills)
  • The ability to understand technical drawings and
  • Have a full clean driving licence.
  • Sound electrical knowledge of DC battery supplies, three phase AC electrical supplies, transformer principles, the fundamentals of circuit protection and earthing arrangements.

Skills:

  • Fitters are expected to demonstrate both practical skills as well as a sound theoretical electrical knowledge of DC batteries and chargers, standby power supplies, three phase AC electrical supplies, transformer principles, AC& DC switchgear operation and the fundamentals of circuit protection and earthing arrangements
  • During the 12 months probationary period there will be a Low Voltage NVQ Assessment.  The assessment will be by written exam in the classroom and on site (practical NVQ assessment).  The job holder will be required to renew their licences every three years by means of reassessment, this process will in turn be supported by HV Power competency and capability policies.
