We're looking to support the exciting growth across AXA Commercial within the Motor Trade Specialist Unit and bring to market an opportunity for a Development Underwriter to join the highly successful team working in the Birmingham or Bristol area.
Building on our success, the Commercial Motor Trade Specialist Unit is looking to enhance the current team with an engaging and forward-thinking Development Underwriter. Providing a fantastic opportunity to build key foundations and shape the narrative, that will provide AXA the exposure and scope for growth required.
We're looking for an ambitious and experienced individual to drive new and profitable growth through effective underwriting of new business cases. This will help drive and transform how we partner our broker portfolios, through responsive, flexible, and collaborative relationships and key to the business reaching profitable growth through the delivery of targets and increasing trading capability of the Motor Trade Specialty Unit.
What you’ll be doing:
- Act as a key member of the Motor Trade team supporting the formation and delivery of branch plans for the product and revenue head.
- Be the face of AXA in presenting propositions for larger MM and MC risks, based on industry knowledge and technical underwriting expertise, subject to the scale and complexity of the case.
- Work with Trading Underwriters to negotiate coverage, wordings and pricing that differentiate AXA to meet customer needs.
- Proactively develop a robust pipeline of Mid-Market and Mid-Corporate qualified growth opportunities leveraging both client and broker relationships, ensuring pipeline is effectively managed and realised.
- Underwrite profitable new business, in line with AXA established underwriting controls and practices and act as a referral point in branch across New Business and, at times, renewals.
- Underwrite large or complex risk within own underwriting authority whilst managing underwriting relationships with key brokers from your designated accounts to deliver profitable growth.
- Referral point for Underwriters to empower the wider team and coach, train and develop the Underwriters to continually improve their technical and trading capability.
- Act in line with underwriting license, holding regular reviews with Branch Underwriting Manager.

You'll work at least 40% of your week away from home, moving to the majority of your working week from September 2025. - Proven track record in underwriting Mid-Market and Mid-Corporate business.
- Record of securing and retaining large scale and complex business through developed senior broker/customer relationships.
- Evidence of previous technical and sales experience extending to effective pipeline management.
- Customer and broker portfolio relationship management.
- Communication & presentation and interpersonal skills.
- Personal impact and influence, with negotiation & persuasion skills.
As a precondition of employment for this role, you must be eligible and authorised to work in the United Kingdom.
This position has been defined as an Insurance Distribution Directive (IDD) role under the IDD regime which means that in addition to pre-employment screening checks, the successful candidate will be subject to background screening every 4 years with an annual declaration in interim years.
