The Special Care and Community Dental Service (CDS) in Allerdale and Copeland is seeking to recruit a compassionate and motivated individual to come and join our existing team of highly skilled clinicians and support staff providing dental care to our patients.

We are looking for a clinician who makes patient care their first priority and who thrives working with a number of different patient groups. Being able to communicate effectively with both patients and staff is essential as you will be responsible for looking after some of the most vulnerable people in society.

You will be supported in developing skills to deliver the main duty of the post, which is to provide emergency dental care for adult and child patients. You will enjoy the professional support of highly qualified and experienced colleagues working within well-equipped modern dental clinics and other healthcare facilities.

Main duties of the job

The main role of the Dental Officer is to provide routine dental care to patients referred to, or accessing the Dental Service. Responsibilities of the role include:

  • Providing dental care to patients with specific requirements using behavioural techniques, conscious sedation or general anaesthesia if within competencies.
  • Providing emergency and urgent care identified through the Dental Direct triage process
  • Liaising with a range of social and other health care personnel and agencies to ensure the effective management of and delivery of care to patients with specific requirements.
  • Involved with the delivery of a domiciliary dental service to patients who may require such service.
  • Delivering care, as required, in a variety of locations within the defined localities of Allerdale and Copeland.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • BDS or equivalent
  • FD obtained or equivalence proved
  • NHSE Performer List number.
  • Registration with the General Dental Council (Dentist)

Desirable

  • Post-graduate competency demonstrated or qualification obtained in sedation.

Experience

Essential

  • One year post-graduate clinical activity

Desirable

  • Experience of and an understanding of the challenges presented by special care patients.
  • Experience in dealing with confidential and sensitive material
  • Experience in clinical audit
  • Proven experience and competence in routine minor oral surgery.

Knowledge

Essential

  • Structure of local NHS Dental services
  • Legislative framework governing the delivery of oral health care in England
  • Basic Life Support

Desirable

  • Contemporary knowledge of Specialist Society guidelines for clinical care
  • Knowledge of legislation and guidance around the process of consent
  • Knowledge of current NHSE commissioning guidance for special care and paediatric dentistry
  • Knowledge of SOE dental software

Skills and Aptitudes

  • Ability to organise own workload and manage priorities.
