We’re looking for outstanding DevOps Engineers to develop, build and maintain our flagship service, Universal Credit and our Working Age Benefits.

Universal Credit is one of the highest profile digital transformation programmes in the world, praised for its fast and flexible response to the Covid-19 pandemic and now in use by over 5 million claimants and 30,000 staff.

As a DevOps Engineer you will be part of a multi-functional agile delivery team and be an integral part of shaping and delivering automated solutions that enable Universal Credit Working Age Benefits to deliver quality services consistently that meet the needs of our agents and claimants. The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with others, actively seek input from colleagues and value a multidisciplinary team over hierarchy. 

This role represents a unique opportunity to join the Universal Credit and Working Age team at DWP Digital, to be part of a team delivering real value to people that need help during the difficult times of their lives.

Job description

Our DevOps Engineers build our products and applications - with researchers, testers, architects, analysts and designers - as part of multi-functional agile delivery teams.

Person specification

When giving details in your CV you should highlight your experience in line with essential criteria below:

  • Demonstrable experience of working in a DevOps environment – Continuous Integration & Deployment, Delivery methods and techniques, including agile.
  • Experience of working in a complex, multi-disciplinary environment, delivering products within specific time-scales.
  • Demonstrable experience of supporting Unix/Linux based platforms and developing solutions using scripting languages.
  • Demonstrable experience of developing and supporting cloud-based applications in AWS.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of implementing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Gitlab CI.
  • Demonstratable experience in designing and implementing best practices using IaC tools such as Terraform, and monitoring tools such as Prometheus & Grafana.

Hybrid Working

This job role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in their DWP office and part of the week from home.  This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your office will be your contractual place of work. The number of days that anyone will be able to work at home will be determined primarily by business need but personal circumstances and other relevant circumstances will also be taken into account. If you are successful, any opportunities for hybrid working, including whether a hybrid working arrangement is suitable for you, will be discussed with you prior to you taking up your post.

Salary Information

National Pay for this role is from £40,201 to £43,347.

The maximum salary for the grade is £43,347, however a Digital Allowance of up to £15,000 per annum is available for exceptional candidates, based on our assessment of your skills and experience.

London Pay for this role is from £45,724 to £47,986.

The maximum salary for the grade is £47,896, however a Digital Allowance of up to £10,361 per annum is available for exceptional candidates, based on our assessment of your skills and experience.

Our offer to successful candidates will be based on an assessment of your skills and experience as demonstrated at interview. Existing Civil Servants who secure a new role on lateral transfer should maintain their current salary. Existing Civil Servants who gain promotion may move to the bottom of the next grade pay scale or a 10% increase in salary whichever would be the greater.

Stage 2: Pre-Interview Exercise

If you are successful at Sift, you will be invited to interview. As part of the interview process you will be expected to complete an Exercise relating to the job role. This exercise will form part of the interview and you are expected to provide this completed exercise 2 working days prior to your interview. Further details of this will be provided should you be successful at sift. 

If you fail to provide the exercise within the agreed timescales, you may have your application withdrawn.

Stage 3: Interview

If you’re successful at sift stage you will be invited to a video interview via Microsoft Teams. There, you will be assessed against the experiences listed in the Essential Criteria listed in the Person Specification.

Interviews will take place from Late-May onwards.
